Margo Nelissen is a contemporary jewelry designer, born in The Netherlands in 1964. She studied at the Academy of fine Arts in Maastricht (1982-1987 department for product design/jewelry design).
After studying African Adornment while traveling through different countries in Africa, she continued at Leiden University studying Cultural Anthropology (1988-1993), specialization amulets in West Africa. She attended Ruudt Peeters’ summer course Now You in 2003. From 2010 to 2013 she lived and worked on the Caribbean Island of Curaçao. In 2014 she is nominated for the Arts & Crafts Design Award 2014.
During her career Margo Nelissen has designed several collections. The first jewels are the result of a research of possibilities to apply ancient textile techniques in metal wire. These applications proved to be diverse. She constructs golden earrings from minuscule weaving- and knitting work to robust yet airy iron and copper necklaces. The inspiration for the designs arises from her admiration of African ways of adornment and the symbolic meanings jewelry can have, but also historic motives have been a great source of inspiration.
